"YOU MAKE ME SMILE WITH MY HEART...."

click on link above

It's Valentine's Day, today, and I want to post here, on my blog, a poem by Pablo Neruda, my favourite poet, in Italian, as I think that Neruda only "works" in Spanish and Italian.

It's Sonnet XVII (17) from Cien Sonnetos de Amor (One Hundred Love Sonnets) which he wrote for his Muse, his wife Matilde (English version can be found on the internet)

 Here it is:

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

XVII

Non t'amo come fossi rosa di sale, topazio
o freccia di garofani che propagano il fuoco:
t'amo come si amano certe cose oscure,
segretamente, entro l'ombra e l'anima.

T'amo come la pianta che non fiorisce e reca
dentro di se`, nascosta, la luce di quei fiori;
grazie al tuo amore vive oscuro nel mio corpo
il concentrato amore che viene dalla terra.

T'amo senza sapere come, ne` quando, ne` da dove,
t'amo direttamente senza problemi, ne` orgoglio:
cosi` ti amo, perche` non so amare altrimenti

che cosi`, in questo modo in cui non sono e non sei,
cosi` vicino che la tua mano sul mio petto e` mia,
cosi` vicino che si chiudono i tuoi occhi col mio sonno

PABLO NERUDA

    1. Good Morning! As to day is the day after Valentine's Day!

The poem is beautiful and well worth reading in English, though, as you know, something is always lost in translations. Having said that, the poem was originally written in Spanish, as Pablo Neruda was from Chile, but it works just as well in Italian.

Have a good day! Love to your beautiful cats!

  7. Such a surprise to see Yoko and John together. It all seems so long ago... how sad... The roses are wonderful and I hope you received an armful of them! I know the poems of Pablo Neruda. Even if you do not believe it - the words are also strong in German. We are not celebrating Valentine's. But you know what we did? We sung the Beatles song I had published on my blog together. It was great fun! Hope the meeting is over now! Buona notte! HUGS, Christa

    1. Christa, the roses in the pictures are the ones my husband got me, with a box of Belgian chocolate and a very romantic card! So, I was very happy!

I came back home after 10, last night, but it didn't really matter too much, because my husband isn't home with me, at the moment... if he had been... no way I would have gone to the meeting!

      BUON GIORNO!

PS: John and Yoko move me so much!

  8. Hi Anna,

I had never heard of Neruda before. My husband is Italian so I had him "loosely translate" the poem for me. And then, just to be sure I looked it up to see how he did. He did very well! : ) The poem is beautiful. I love the last line. You can tell how much he loves her. This was a perfect day to post this. Thank you for sharing with us.

  9. Hi Danielle!

Pablo Neruda was a Nobel Prize Winner for Literature in 1971. He was born in Chile. I love all his works, his political engagement and, most of all, I love the themes of his fantastic works and the passion, his use of symbolism in poetry and the way he embraced life. I actually can't read his poems without crying ( I don't cry a lot, but I am really moved by certain things)they are so beautiful...

Say "Ciao" to your lovely Italian husband!

    Buona Giornata!

  11. Nichela,

Why are you celebrating San Faustino? Who's that? He is San Valentino's brother?

CIAO... spero che San Faustino ti porti una bella cosa ( O NO?)

    Con simpatia...

  16. I think it was a real child, Christa, and, yes... I do notice "things" and manage to spot the funny little boy.

It was fine in the day, here, Christa, but I'm now beginning to feel a bit cold. I wish I didn't have to go out this evening, but I'm going to a very spooky place at 6 and I'm not looking forward to it!
